Evergreen Trees for the Panhandle
Culture
Key:
d - Plants that can withstand periodic drought.
w - Plants that can tolerate wet soils. A + indicates plants
that require consistently moist soils.
p - Plants that need a protected planting site - avoid exposed
or windswept sites.

layered foliage; protect from wind)

- Pseudotsuga menziesii (p; not as drought tolerant as spruce)

Concolor - Abies concolor (p; one of the most beautiful
evergreens; should be planted more)
- Juniper,
Chinese - Juniperus chinensis (d; 'Keteleer' is a great cultivar)
- Juniper,
Rocky Mountain - Juniperus scopulorum (d; wide range of cultivars;
prefers well drained soils)
- Pine,
Austrian - Pinus nigra (d; the old standby but often disease
prone)

Bristlecone - Pinus aristata (d; for well drained soils only;
slow grower; great looking foliage)

Eastern White - Pinus strobus (p; what a nice, soft foliaged
tree)

Jack - Pinus banksiana (d; extremely cold hardy; gnarly growth
habit)

Limber - Pinus flexilis (d; native to Kimball County; very flexible
branches; for well-drained soils)

Lodgepole – Pinus contorta latifolia (d; Rocky Mountain
native; seldom seen in Nebraska; plant more)
