Evergreen Trees for the Panhandle

Culture Key:
d
- Plants that can withstand periodic drought.
w - Plants that can tolerate wet soils.  A + indicates plants that require consistently moist soils.
p - Plants that need a protected planting site - avoid exposed or windswept sites.

Evergreen Trees

  1. Arborvitae, American - Thuja occidentalis (p;  interesting vertically layered foliage; protect from wind)
  2. Douglasfir - Pseudotsuga menziesii (p; not as drought tolerant as spruce)
  3. Fir, Concolor - Abies concolor (p; one of the most  beautiful evergreens; should be planted more)
  4. Juniper, Chinese - Juniperus chinensis (d; 'Keteleer' is a great cultivar)
  5. Juniper, Rocky Mountain - Juniperus scopulorum (d; wide range of cultivars; prefers well drained soils)
  6. Pine, Austrian - Pinus nigra (d; the old standby but often disease prone)
  7. Pine, Bristlecone - Pinus aristata (d; for well drained soils only; slow grower; great looking foliage)
  8. Pine, Eastern White - Pinus strobus (p; what a nice, soft foliaged tree)
  9. Pine, Jack - Pinus banksiana (d; extremely cold hardy; gnarly growth habit)
  10. Pine, Limber - Pinus flexilis (d; native to Kimball County; very flexible branches; for well-drained soils)
  11. Pine, Lodgepole – Pinus contorta latifolia (d; Rocky  Mountain native; seldom seen in Nebraska; plant more)
  12. Pine, Mugo - Pinus mugo (d; many forms from dwarf to larger types)
  13. Pine, Pinyon - Pinus cembroides var. edulis (d; for well drained soils; nice edible nut)
  14. Pine, Ponderosa - Pinus ponderosa (d; reliable native)
  15. Pine, Red - Pinus resinosa (p; very cold hardy)
  16. Pine, Scotch - Pinus sylvestris (beautiful bark; somewhat over planted)
  17. Redcedar, Eastern - Juniperus virginiana (d; Canaerti is a great cultivar; nuff said)
  18. Spruce, Black Hills - Picea glauca var. densata (nice  alternative to blue spruce; watch out for spider mites)
  19. Spruce, Colorado - Picea pungens (d; the old standby; many cultivars with wide color and habit range)
  20. Spruce, Norway - Picea abies (p; beautiful weeping habit)
