Dr. Gary Hein

Extension Entomologist

Dr. Gary Hein is a Professor in the Department of Entomology for the University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center. He has a combined research (50%) and Extension (50%) appointment at the University of Nebraska and is a faculty affiliate in the Department of Entomology at Colorado State University. He earned a B.A. in biology from Concordia College, Moorhead, MN in 1976, and earned an M.S. (1981) and Ph.D. (1984) in entomology from Iowa State University.

Position Responsibilities:
Research: Develop improved insect management strategies for arthropod pests of small grains and specialty crops (sugarbeet, dry beans, sunflower) grown in the Nebraska Panhandle. Emphasis is on determining aspects of biology and ecology that are relevant to pest status and management and developing integrated management strategies that will allow economic control of pests, while reducing the overall impact of management tactics on the environment.
Extension: Develop educational programs that provide the knowledge and experience necessary to implement integrated management strategies for arthropod pests of agronomic importance to crops grown in the Nebraska Panhandle. Crop emphasis is on winter wheat, sugar beets, dry beans, sunflowers, and corn.

Major Research Areas:

1. Epidemiology and management of wheat streak mosaic and high plains viruses as impacted by the ecology and biology of the wheat curl mite vector.

2. Determination of resistance levels in sugarbeet varieties to sugarbeet root aphid, variance in aphid response and genetic variability of sugarbeet root aphid populations.

3. Management of the Mexican bean beetle in dry beans in the Great Plains.

4. Western bean cutworm biology and ecology and its economic impacts on dry beans an corn in the western plains.

5. Improved management of Russian wheat aphid in barley by integration of biological and cultural control with aphid resistant cultivars. (CSREES-Crop at Risk Program)
