BVD-Free Monitored Herd ProgramBy Arden
Wohlers DVM This herd has met the following requirements to minimize the harboring or transmitting of the disease Bovine Virus Diarrhea. The first year all new additions to the herd (birth or purchase) will be tested negative for persistent infection by immunohistochemistry (ear notch test). This includes stillbirths and abortions. If the fetus is not available the cow will be tested. At the end of the calving season all cows would be tested before culling, if she did not have a calf to test. A purchased pregnant cow will be held in quarantine until her calf can be tested. All other purchased animals will be tested prior to entering the premise or held in quarantine until negative results of the test are returned. The test will be waived if the animals come from a BVD monitored herd. Requirements for maintaining BVD Monitored Herd Status after the first year will be the same for purchased animals. All calves born on the premise that die other than from trauma will be tested. If a positive result is obtained, then that year’s total calf crop will be tested before the breeding season commences. All test positive animals will be destroyed. Quarantine will mean no fence line contact with other livestock and separate water and feed troughs from other livestock. All cattle are vaccinated twice by one year of age and at least one of these vaccinations would be by a live vaccine containing both type 1 and type 2 virus. Older cattle already on the premise and purchased animals must be held in quarantine until they meet these vaccination requirements. Immunity to the BVD virus will be maintained by annual vaccination of each animal by either a killed or live product containing both type 1 and type 2 antigens. The vaccine will be given according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The herd owner/manager and a veterinary consultant familiar with the operation will sign this document annually as evidence of maintaining BVD-free monitored status.
