Mace
Mace is a hard red winter wheat cultivar developed and released cooperatively by the USDA-ARS and the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station. It was released primarily for its high level of resistance to wheat streak mosaic virus, which was introgressed from intermediate wheatgrass. Mace is a semi-dwarf wheat cultivar with a plant height of about 31 inches, which is about one inch taller than Wesley and nearly 4 inches shorter than Millenium. It has good lodging resistance. Mace is moderately resistant to stem and stripe rust, but it is susceptible to leaf rust. It is susceptible to Hessian fly. Mace should be considered for use in locations where wheat streak mosaic virus is a concern, for example, in areas where hail caused yield losses in the previous crop year. Non-complimentary varieties include: Yuma, Yumar, and RonL.
